Early on in the process we knew that we wanted the final level to be stormy to portray the escalating danger of the levels. While discussing the theme with the graphical artists and looking at their reference pictures, an idea came to mind;
“What if the entire level took place around a raging whirlpool?“
With the approval from other disciplines, I started designing around this idea. While it took time to realize how to realistically utilize the whirlpool into the level design within the given scope, It eventually turned into something really extraordinary.
Thank you to everyone on my team for making it turn out how it did
Reflections
I’m personally not very familiar with 3D Platformers so this project was also me learning to get familiar with them and their design.
Since movement is such a large part of these games, it was always important to playtest new or changed sections to make sure that jump distances, area sizes and camera clippings weren’t hindering the experience.
Thank you to my wonderful team for making this project such a joy to work with!
What would I have done different now?
With my limited knowledge of the genre in mind, I wish I would have spent more time playing games within the genre before building in engine to get a better feel of what works and doesn’t. This would’ve saved me a lot of time and given me a better ground to work from when it came to designing.
